This is an image (bad quality) of a lightning strike on a outbound 747 from Japan’s Osaka airport. All that wattage hitting the plane and there is no damage to plane nor circuitry. No plane in 40 years has ever been brought down by lightning, so don’t worry.
I mean, add up your chances of getting struck by lightning and multiply that by the chance of being in an airline crash and divide your frequent flyer miles and, well, you just get a mess - but you still don’t get lunch.

I suppose it’s better than mercury and lead.
What will they think of next?
UPDATE: NoPoPo stands for “Non-Pollution Power.” I thought it stood for “Novelty Power Pods.” Eh, what do I know?

Mike Bombich’s Carbon Copy Cloner is one of those “must have” programs for the Mac, allowing you to completely clone/backup your hard drives.
Well, version 3.0 is out now with a nice new feature set:
• Support for block-level disk-to-disk clones.
• Synchronization built-in, not bolted on.
• Support for backing up across the network to another Macintosh.
• Advanced scheduling capabilities — Backup tasks can now be scheduled on an hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly basis, or you can indicate that a backup task should run when the backup device is attached (e.g. an iPod).
• CCC recognizes iPods specifically, allowing time for the iPod:iTunes synchronization to complete.
• The ability to drill down into folders to select exactly what gets copied and what doesn’t (you can drill down indefinitely).
• Built-in software update feature notifies you when updates are available.
CCC is a Universal binary, which means it’s for both Power PC Macs and Intel Macs. The program is donation-ware, so Bombich has a tip cup if you find CCC useful.

Here are some links to help you get started with copyrighting your photographs.
• Editorial Photographers page on copyright
• Bert P. Krages II page on copyright
• Library of Congress’ page on copyrighting visual art works
This is certainly a case of do as I say and not as I do. I’ve got to get my stuff copyrighted.

If you click on this link (warning, PDF download) you should be downloading a 178-page update to Martin Evening’s Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Book, The: The Complete Guide for Photographers book. Probably the best and most comprehensive LightRoom book out there at the moment. The PDF covers what is new in the recent LightRoom 1.1 update. Of course, LightRoom is at 1.2 now. You can download the 1.2 update here (it contains the 1.1 update too)
If the link doesn’t work, please let me know. It’s about a 20 meg download, so it’ll take a few minutes.

Pop Photo has their hands on the new Canon G9 and have published a test/preview/review on their website.
This is the camera I’d get for taking snapshots (and the occasional stock shot) since I’ve very fond of Canon’s point & shoot cameras (yes, even though I’m a Nikon guy).
The G9 is a 12 megapixel $500 point & shoot with the capability to capture RAW images, unlike its predecessor, the G8. It’s also a standard def video recorder (640×480 at 30 fps) and has optical image stabilization. Plus. I’m sure, a dozen other cool features that are covered by Pop Photo’s review.
Go read and find out if it’s a worth upgrade to the G8. I’m sure it is.

Here’s a nice detailed page from Nikon about the new D3 DSLR. Also, a page of six preview jpegs for your perusal.
I’ve looked at the samples and, even as JPEGs, they look pretty good, especially the ones shot at ISO 400. Looks like Nikon has another winner on its hands.
Time to start saving.
