diskutil.jpg (Warning - GeekSpeak Ahead)
For those of you who always wanted to know what File Journaling is… Apple posted a nice, easy-to-understand Knowledge Base document explaining all. Most of the time, you don’t need to worry about this since this is stuff that works in the background of your Mac. Although, you should understand more about journaling when you go to reformat a hard disk.

My quick summary - Journalling should be turned on, by default, on your startup disk. This is where it does the most good. On external, or secondary hard drives, having journalling on can actually slow down performance, especially if you use them as Photoshop scratch disks or to capture video onto. Reformat these drive with Journaling turned off (an option in the Disk Utility program).

Lesson over.

garagesale.jpgOk, now you have no excuse not to start fishing through all that crap in your closet and selling it on Ebay. GarageSale is a nifty little program that makes the Ebay experience tolerable and, sometimes, downright fun. All you need to do is provide the images, description and Ebay account and GarageSale will do all the rest. It will help to produce nice and professional looking auction pages which it will upload directly to the Ebay site. No need for you to mess with the confusing Ebay interface when you post a new auction. Check out sample auctions here.

A great program and well worth the $25.

Now, what are you sitting there for!? Off to Ebay with you. Sell! Sell! Sell!

In addition to enhanced compatibility, Aperture 1.1 also provides a variety of significant performance and feature enhancements.

More after the jump.

(note - I am posting this as information only and not because I like Aperture. I think Adobe’s LightRoom will end up being a better product. Go and test it for yourself. - AMR)

Well, it’s late at night and I’m sitting here listening to my iPod on my new Logitech mm50 portable speaker system and I thought, well, heck, let me tell everyone what I think of this thing. Then I thought, why not add it as a review in this blog. Hey, it’s my blog and I can do what I want. Of course, you get to benefit form thinking like that. I’m going to keep this review short and to the point. There are lots of other sources where you can get the specs on this device (I’ll link to them in the review) and I just want to concentrate my opinion only. So here goes.

Speaking about updates to updates…

I received this message from an Adobe program the other day:

Adobe UpdaterScreenSnapz001.jpg

I just quit.

Mar 16

softwareupdate.jpgTime to run the old Apple Software Update program again. Actually, it’s an update to the previous security update released last week. Of course, you should install it because it’s a security update, but, c’mon Apple! What’s with all these updates? An update of an update? Sheeesh.

windows.gifFor those few of you who are interested, there’s been a running contest to see if someone could get Windows XP to install and boot up on one of the new Intel-based Macintoshes.

Well, someone got it to run and won himself thirteen boxes of Ziti. (that’s $13,000 for those who don’t speak Soprano)

Here’s the story from The Unofficial Apple Weblog:

p4500.jpgDigital photographers have long made Epson’s Photo Fine devices their PMPs of choice, which is no surprise given the excellent 3.8-inch display, ample storage, RAW viewer, EXIF manipulation tools and CF/SD slots available on the units. Unfortunately, the latest version, the P-4500, seems to have few upgrades over the fact that its screen is said to be 1.5x brighter than that of its predecessor, the P-4000, which was announced just a few months ago. Other than that, specs look the same, including the same 80GB drive, MP3 and video playback and video out. We hope the “upgrade” doesn’t mean a hit on the wallet — or on battery life, which is often the case when you pump up the brightness.

epsoncamera.jpgIf you’re looking for a way to make use of that extensive collection of Leica lenses you’ve accumulated over the years, there’s another option beside waiting (and waiting) for Leica to release the Digital M.
Epson has announced a modest upgrade to the R-D1, the company’s digital rangefinder, which is compatible with Leica M mount and L mount glass. The R-D1s shares its predecessor’s 6 megapixel APS-C sensor, 2-inch LCD, RAW format, multiple black-and-white modes, and ISO 200-1600, and adds a few minor improvements, including a JPEG RAW mode, quick view function, Adobe RGB mode, and noise reduction for long exposures. Pricing hasn’t been announced, but will probably be in line with the original R-D1, which goes for about $3,000 (and which will probably come down a bit now that this one’s out, so if you can live without JPEG RAW and Adobe RGB, you may want to skip this one and see what kind of deal you can get on the D1 — unless you’d rather keep waiting for the Digital M).
