According to this article at MacFixIt.com, you should not format any of your memory cards using Apple’s Disk Utility program. Any card you need to format, do so with the device that you’re using the card with, be it a digital camera or MP3 player, or whatever.
I had this happen to me as well, and I had to run all sorts of utilities to get my camera to recognize the memory card again. I don’t understand why they don’t tell you this in the manual. Well, at least you have me to tell you.
